What is historical dance? Our aim is that young dancers become literate in dance through experiencing and performing dances from different periods. As well as performing choreography from past cultural eras, The Children's Dance Company performs dances by contemporary choreographers and often participate in the creation of new choreography. Dancers learn to research dance history, write and read basic dance notation. | ||||

Why a Children's Dance Company?
In 1994, for the centennial celebration of the birth of famous dancer and choreographer Doris Humphrey, Ms. Posey recreated four dances that Ms. Humphrey had choreographed for children circa 1910. The young children not only learned the dances and performed them at Lincoln Center, they learned a great deal about the times in which the choreographer lived. As the young dancers embodied the movement, they also experienced how children of that era danced. It was an excellent learning opportunity that we now strive to recreate with other famous choreographer's work, from dance literature and from various historical periods.
