Creative Moves - Toddlers 2 and Up With Parent

Fairy tales, folk songs and nursery rhymes introduce dance to boys and girls as they learn movement games and simple rhythmic games. This class prepares the children to work on their own in the next level so they are ready to learn. Tuesday 10-10:45, Tuesday 3-3:45 Saturday 1-1:30

Introduction To Dance - Boys and Girls Ages 3 - 4

Children explore movement and dance through a variety of activities which develop loco motor skills, flexibility, coordination and balance. Music and rhythm are emphasized as the children explore the relationship of sound to movement. Children’s literature (stories and poetry) are used as an inspiration to dance. There is never a dull moment in this class! Wednesday 3:15-4 Saturday 9-9:45

Creative Dance I&II - Boys and Girls Ages 4 - 6

While exploring elements of dance: space, shape, rhythm and the flow of energy, the children dance about stories and ideas that stretch the imagination, develop creative expression and self-confidence. Dance at this level introduces various forms of dance, simplified folk dance steps and is LOTS OF FUN! Children may attend this level for two years while they receive an excellent foundation for further dance studies. Tuesday 4-4:50 Wednesday 4-4:50 Saturday 10-10:50

Kindergartners Exploring Dance

This class is especially designed for children who are in kindergarten. They are not merely learning “dances” taught by others, but capably demonstrating their knowledge of dance concepts and creating their own dances. They explore ballet, contemporary and jazz music with appropriate styles of dance. They learn to “read and write” in Motif © dance notation. Elements of Dance & Ballet - Boys and Girls Ages 6 - 8

First Graders and older children enjoy incorporating more structure and technique while continuing to develop creative skills through improvisation and compositional dance studies in preparation for technique classes. Basic modern dance skills and basic ballet vocabulary improves students coordination, strength and ability to move safely, easily and beautifully. Children improve their dance language skills by notating their own dances and learning to read each other’s notation. At this age they may be ready to show their movement studies to parents, friends and relatives invited to their classes and participate in informal performances. Boys Can Dance - Boys Ages 7 - 10

Watching their sisters having fun in dance class, many boys ask, “Can’t boys dance?” This is our response. Yes, Boys Can Dance! We explore our personal ways of moving through improvisation and contemporary dance techniques. This class is physically challenging and mentally stimulating. Boys find a release for built up kinetic energy and enjoy the creative outlet dance provides—warning: This is not a class for sissies or sisters. Monday 6:15-7:00

Pre-Teen, Teen and Adult Programs

Ballet Program

American Neoclassic Ballet and Cecchetti ballet techniques taught in comprehensive and developmental style allowing each student to learn at their own pace. Although some children may be ready for ballet as early as age seven, most children should not begin until they are eight or nine. The children’s ballet classes are planned especially to interest young boys and girls in the art of ballet as it is performed today; including both classic and contemporary styles from throughout the world to classical, jazz and contemporary music. Studies in composition and choreography further improvisational skills and exploration. Placement in class is by age, ability and demonstrated ability to concentrate on learning the art of dance. Students are accepted for one class weekly. We recommend two classes weekly 1st year, two or three classes weekly 2nd & 3rd year of study. When students dance on pointe they are expected to attend 3 or more classes weekly. Contemporary Modern Dance

Modern Dance explores dance concepts, encourages correct body placement and ease of movement. Using a variety of contemporary modern dance techniques that introduce floor work, traveling movements and dance sequences the class emphasis is on personal discovery and enjoyment of dance. Performance opportunities are offered as soon as students are ready to share their dances with others. Placement is by age, ability and demonstrated ability to concentrate on learning the art of dance. We recommend students study at least one year of ballet technique before they begin Contemporary Modern Dance classes but we do make exceptions for some students. Monday Modern (Beg./Elem.) Jazz and Tap Dance - Boys and Girls Ages 7 - 16

Classes are intended for students who have already achieved a fundamental understanding of dance technique, either ballet or modern dance or both. This is not a class for beginners. Jazz class consists of warm up, specialized jazz movement studies and composition. Jazz dance in Musical Theatre is a defined dance technique, it is not ‘street dance or hip hop’ although some movements have ‘crossed over’ into the theater from the vernacular. Students in the jazz and tap dance program learn an historical perspective showing the evolution of theatrical styles from the late 1800s through today. Tuesday Tap Int. (12+) 4-5:00 Tuesday Tap Beg. A Combined art lecture and studio experience. The work of Pablo Picasso and friends will be explored. Picasso’s “Blue Period”, “Rose Period” and Cubism will be looked at. We will be painting, doing collages and working with clay. Saturday 1-2

Professional Preparatory Program

Dancers who have achieved intermediate or more advanced levels of technique in ballet and/or contemporary modern dance and jazz are invited to participate in this program if they show a serious interest in the art of dance. In addition to technique classes, they are offered classes in choreography and composition, dance history, and performance skills. They may be invited to join Posey Dance Repertory Company.

National Honor Society For Dance Arts

Posey School is the home of New York State Chapter One of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, under sponsorship of the National Dance Education Organization. Students are eligible from the age of eleven through high school and earn credits for community service and academic achievement as well as dance studies. Ask for an application and more information.
