On Friday, May 9, sixteen dancers from Posey School between the ages of eleven and fifteen were invited to attend a special class at the New York City Ballet (NYCB). This was the first class in the history of the New York City Ballet, the beginning of a pilot program to introduce young dancers to the company. Taught by New York City ballet dancer Dana Hansson, the class was enjoyed by all the dancers. After a lunch break in the Rose Building cafeteria, the students walked up to Steps on Broadway where they attended professional class with Madame Peff Modelski. The excitement of being in class with all professional dancers was simply “awesome.” The dancers and seven parents who accompanied them were then treated to a tour of the Dance Research Library at Lincoln Center where they learned how to access materials in the library. Librarian Monica Mosely exhibited several items of special interest including rare photos of Martha Graham, notated dance scores from 1715, drawings of costumes for Swan Lake, an oral history of a NYCB ballerina, a film of Doris Humphrey and her company performing “Air on the G String” and a video tape of the NYCB rehearsing Swan Lake. That evening the dancers attended NYCB’s new three-act “Swan Lake Ballet” choreographed by Peter Martins. It was an exciting day that will be remembered by all who attended. | ||||||||
